A casting call has gone out for Guitar Kulture Video Magazine, a weekly 30-minute television program designed for national cable distribution that will showcase players, technique, gear, vintage instruments, and recordings. The Cámara Junior of Colombia has honored classical guitarist Ricardo Cobo as "Executive of the Year" for his leadership and outstanding cultural achievements. A champion of Latin American music, Cobo currently serves on the artist faculty of Temple University and divides his time between Colombia and New York City.
Warner Brothers has also released The Guitar Artistry of Bill Frisell, an instructional video by the well-known jazz guitarist (see "A Jazzman in Nashville," September) that covers background, technique, effects, harmony, rhythm, and arranging, and includes performances of "Days of Wine and Roses," "Strange Meeting," "When We Go," and other pieces.
Star Licks Master Sessions has released Robert Johnson's Guitar Techniques, an instructional video taught by Scott Ainslie, which covers seven of Johnson's tunes, including "Kindhearted Woman Blues," "Sweet Home Chicago," "Drunken Hearted Man," and "Cross Road Blues." The video is accompanied by a booklet that gives chord forms and licks in both tab and standard notation.
The New Lost City Ramblers (Mike Seeger, John Cohen, and Tracy Schwarz) have put out There Ain't No Way Out, their first studio album in 23 years, on Smithsonian/Folkways. The label has also just reissued Harry Smith's influential Anthology of American Folk Music, first released in 1952; and Close to Home: Old Time Music from Mike Seeger's Collection, 1952-1967, featuring Snuffy Jenkins, Maybelle Carter, and Elizabeth Cotten.
Paul Simon's Graceland (Warner) has been reissued as an enhanced CD, in honor of the album's tenth anniversary. The enhanced content includes video footage from the original recording sessions, new interviews with Simon and other featured performers, footage and stills from the tour, and Simon's track-by-track commentary.
Charlie Christian, a new biography by Peter Broadbent (published by Ashley Mark), offers insight into the life and musical career of the jazz great, as well as more than 75 historic photos and illustrations.
