James Taylor will perform at the high school of the winner of the Where the Music Takes You lyric-writing program, sponsored by the Scholastic Book Club and the Sony Portable Audio Group. Taylor will pick the winner of the contest and provide songwriting tips to all participants.
Taj Mahal will narrate and perform in a blues documentary featuring some of the South's finest unknown blues talent. Expressin' the Blues is set to air on the A&E channel.
Ani DiFranco is finishing production on a Woody Guthrie tribute album to be released by Righteous Babe. The CD will be culled from hours of Guthrie music performed by Bruce Springsteen, the Indigo Girls, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Billy Bragg, and Ramblin' Jack Elliott at a concert at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in September 1996.
Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album, which has sold more than 40 million copies, has been remade track by track with a cast of current hitmakers for Lava/Atlantic. Rumours Revisited includes Jewel singing "You Make Loving Fun" and Shawn Colvin redoing "The Chain."
Razor and Tie (www.razorandtie.com) has released a compilation of Livingston Taylor's early acoustic recordings, Carolina Day: The Livingston Taylor Collection (1970-1980).
The Irish-American group Solas provides the music for a new Disney children's release, Winnie the Pooh: Friends Forever. Solas has also finished filming a PBS special that will be aired later this year and released on home video by Shanachie.
Two new books will be of interest to blues fans. Lightnin' Hopkins: The Gold Star Years, from Mel Bay, contains transcriptions of 14 of Hopkins' songs, while The Blues Is a Feeling, by James Fraher (Face to Face, [414] 962-3579), is a collection of 100 sumptuous duotone photos of blues musicians.
The European World of Bluegrass will take place May 21-June 1. The IBMA European Bluegrass Festival and Trade Show in Lichtenvoorde, the Netherlands, will kick off the extravaganza, which includes two more festivals in the Netherlands and Germany.
