IN MEMORY

Jimmy Driftwood, master of traditional folk and country music, died July 12 at the age of 91 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. In addition to being a folklorist and performer of traditional music, Driftwood wrote hit songs for Johnny Horton ("Johnny Reb" and "Battle of New Orleans") and Eddy Arnold ("Tennessee Stud").

The jazz guitar world lost one of its most gifted players with the passing of Tal Farlow, who died of cancer at age 77 on Saturday, July 25. Though he had no formal musical training, Farlow's large, spidery hands and unsurpassed dexterity with the Red Norvo Trio and other ensembles were legendary. Gibson recently resumed production of the distinctive Tal Farlow model electric archtop guitar that it first introduced in 1962.
