The Welk Music Group, which includes Vanguard Records, has acquired Sugar Hill Records, whose roster includes Jerry Douglas, Guy Clark, Doc Watson, and other bluegrass and Americana stars. Sugar Hill will maintain its headquarters in Durham, North Carolina, and continue under the direction of founder and president Barry Poss.
Michael Chapdelaine of Albuquerque, New Mexico, won the fingerpicking championship at the 98 Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, while Cody Kilby of Cowan, Tennessee, snagged the flatpicking crown. Second and third prizes went to fingerpickers Brad Richter of Tucson, Arizona, and Sam Pacetti of St. Augustine, Florida, and flatpickers Carl Miner, of Medford, Oregon, and former champ Robin Kessinger of St. Albans, West Virginia.

Club Passim, the legendary folk venue located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, celebrates its 40th anniversary with a concert on January 16 featuring Joan Baez and others. Originally known as Club 47, Passim has been host to such folk luminaries as Baez, Bob Dylan, Tom Rush, Tracy Chapman, Muddy Waters, Taj Mahal, Jackson Browne, Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega, and Nanci Griffith since its original incarnation as an ice cream shop.
Marcin Dylla of Katowice, Poland, took first prize in the 1998 International Guitar Competition Karl Scheit. Marco Antonio Diaz Tamayo of Havana, Cuba, and Jose Antonio Escobar of Santiago, Chile, shared third prize.

Gene Autry, Hollywoods first singing cowboy, died October 2 at his home in Los Angeles, California. Autry, the only entertainer with five stars on Hollywoods Walk of Fame, made 95 movies and 635 records, including his trademark "Back in the Saddle Again" and best-selling "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."
