Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young kick off their CSNY2K tour January 24 in Detroit, Michigan. The two-month trek in support of Looking Forward marks the first tour by the quartet since their blockbuster 1974 outing. Get more information at the official CSN&Y Web site: www.csny.net.

Tucson, Arizona, guitarist Brad Richter took first prize in this year's Walnut Valley fingerpicking contest in Winfield, Kansas. Top honors in the flatpicking division went to Carl Miner of Medford, Oregon. Richter and Miner each placed second in the '98 contests. Former John Denver sideman Pete Huttlinger and Jay Buckey nabbed the second and third place trophies for fingerpicking. Roy Curry and Steve Lewis were the runners-up in the flatpicking division.

Cheryl Wheeler's anti-violence anthem "If It Were Up to Me" continues to raise hackles, inspire debate, and garner support for gun control. Garth Brooks, in the guise of his alter-ego Chris Gaines, has released the controversial song on his new CD In the Life of Chris Gaines.

Dave Matthews dropped his guitar and grabbed the makeup recently as he made his thespian debut. The singer had a part in a remake of the classic 1974 film Where the Red Ferns Grow.

Legendary jazz guitarist Sal Salvador passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 1999, after a bout with cancer. At 74, he was still actively gigging, recording, teaching, and contributing to Just Jazz Guitar magazine. He was a longtime endorser of Gretsch guitars, which introduced the Salvador signature model jazz instrument in 1958.
