Singer/bassist/guitarist Rick Danko died in Woodstock, New
York, on December 10, the day after his 56th birthday. Danko's melancholy
voice and punchy bass playing were at the heart of the Band, the
seminal rock act noted both for its inventive roots-oriented originals
and for accompanying Bob Dylan on his first forays into electric
music. Danko had recently completed a tour in support of his new
Web-only release Live from Breeze Hill.
Legendary Texas guitarist and singer-songwriter Doug Sahm
died of a heart attack in Taos, New Mexico, on November 18. Sahm
made his guitar debut on the Grand Ole Opry at the age of six and
later founded the Sir Douglas Quintet. In recent years he played
with Tex-Mex supergroup the Texas Tornados and recorded scores of
albums with artists ranging from Willie Nelson to the Grateful Dead.
