WHAT'S HAPPENING
To “better define the contribution of women to the history of modern guitar”—and rebut the presumption behind the frequently asked question 'why are there no great female guitar players?'—Patty Larkin has produced La Guitara: Gender Bender Strings, a 14-track CD with performances by a wide variety of women pickers past and present. Represented are Wu Man, Sharon Isbin, Memphis Minnie, Mimi Fox, Kaki King, Ellen McIlwaine, Badi Assad, Alex Houghton, Vicki Genfan, Muriel Anderson, Rory Block, Jennifer Batten, Elizabeth Cotten, and Larkin herself. Coinciding with the CD’s release on Vanguard Records (http://www.vanguardrecords.com/laguitara/home.html), Larkin, King, Anderson, and Fox are on tour throughout November. Larkin plans to keep the tour going through 2006 (with King and Isbin) and 2007 (with Assad and McIlwaine). Get more details in the La Guitara pages on Larkin’s website, and watch for Dan Ouellette’s roundtable discussion with some of the participants in the March 2006 issue of Acoustic Guitar.
